Your virtual background is undermining your execut Your virtual background is undermining your executive presence.

We've all seen it—the colleague on a C-suite call with a digital backdrop of a company logo, or worse, a beach scene. It seems harmless enough.

But here's what's actually happening: Before you deliver a single insight, you've already signaled something unintended to your audience.

In my executive coaching practice, I've had the difficult conversation that many advisors avoid: Digital backgrounds are sabotaging your credibility.

Here's why they fail at the leadership level:

You don't have a broadcast-quality studio ensuring flawless execution. What you have is a laptop camera struggling to distinguish you from your artificial environment. The result? Your hand disappears mid-gesture. Your ear just vanished. Your hair glitches. Parts of your head fade in and out during critical moments of your presentation.

This isn't a technical issue—it's a leadership presence issue.

When you're communicating strategy to your board, rallying your executive team, or representing your organization to stakeholders, this all creates subconscious doubt. You appear less prepared, less polished, less authoritative—regardless of the quality of your message.

The solution isn't more sophisticated technology. It's intentional environment design that reinforces rather than undermines your executive presence.

We've developed a framework for optimizing your physical space that transforms your online presence from distraction to strategic asset.

Influential leaders understand every element of their presentation—including what's behind them—either builds or erodes trust.

Ready to command the room, even when that room is online?

The counterintuitive leadership advantage hiding i The counterintuitive leadership advantage hiding in plain sight:

Most executives prepare for high-stakes moments with slide decks and talking points. The most commanding leaders also prepare with movement.

Today is National Take a Hike Day (so I dug up this video from our family trip to Joshua Tree National Park earlier this year)... a fitting reminder that the path to executive presence sometimes requires you to step away from your desk.

Here's the executive edge physical activity provides:

Before critical presentations: Strategic exercise triggers a neurochemical response -- elevated endorphins, reduced cortisol -- that translates to visible composure. You enter the boardroom with the calm authority that commands attention.

During pressure-test moments: Consistent physical training builds stress resilience at a neural level. When investors challenge your projections or the board pivots mid-meeting, your cognitive flexibility becomes your competitive advantage.

For executive presence: The difference between nervous energy and executive gravitas often comes down to physiology. Movement channels that energy, allowing you to project the steady confidence that defines influential leadership.

I've worked with C-suite executives who protect time for pre-presentation movement as rigorously as they protect prep time. Even a 10-minute power walk transforms their delivery from competent to commanding.

The bottom line: Your physical state is inseparable from your professional impact.

The leaders who understand this connection don't just perform better... they're perceived as more credible, more authoritative, and more in control.

How will you invest in your executive presence today?

"If I’m walking into a room where I have the least "If I’m walking into a room where I have the least experience, how do I project confidence?"

Unpopular opinion: I do NOT believe in "fake it until you make it."

It doesn't work.

And - here are a few really easy things to do when you're not confident in a situation.
Things to physically do.
And things to look out for so they don't mess with your confidence.

Loved talking to Camille Fetter, founder/CEO at @talentfootofficial.

What are YOUR tips?
As executives, we put everyone else first. We put As executives, we put everyone else first. We put our companies first.

But here's what I learned the hard way: You can't lead effectively from an empty tank.

The guy in this video says taking the time to run even helps his golf game.

He gets it!

In a National Institute of Health study, 51% of executives report high stress levels, with the main stressor identified as work, followed by family, health, and work-life balance.

The game-changer?

Treating self-care as a LEADERSHIP STRATEGY, not a luxury.

Exercise isn't vanity. It's mental clarity. Boundaries aren't a weakness. They're strategic. Rest isn't laziness. It's recovery.
Your leadership depends on it.

CEOs are shifting how they communicate—and it's wo CEOs are shifting how they communicate—and it's working.

I recently came across research on CEO social media use that reinforced what we're seeing with our clients every day.

The data is clear: Executives who show up authentically on LinkedIn are reaching employees, customers, and prospects faster than traditional channels ever could.

Here's what's driving the shift:

Trust matters more than polish. A candid post from a CEO during a crisis or major announcement carries more credibility than any polished press release. Stakeholders want to hear directly from leadership.

Internal comms are going public. What used to live in company-wide emails now appears on LinkedIn first. Smart organizations recognize that transparency builds trust—both internally and externally.

It drives tangible results. Beyond engagement metrics, we've seen executive presence on LinkedIn accelerate sales cycles, attract top talent, and open doors that traditional marketing simply can't.

The nuance? It requires strategy, consistency, and authenticity.

Most CEOs know they should be active on social media—but figuring out the "how" is where many get stuck.

If you're on an executive team exploring this, I'm happy to share what's working. Drop a comment or send me a DM—whether you're a client or not.

On this Veterans Day, we pause to express our deep On this Veterans Day, we pause to express our deep gratitude to those who have served our country with courage and dedication.

We're especially grateful for the veterans in our community—individuals whose military experience has shaped them into the exceptional leaders they are today:

👏 The Navy sailors who protected our waters now navigate complex business challenges with the same precision.

🫡 The military doctors and medical officers who saved lives under the most challenging conditions continue their mission of service in healthcare.

👏 The infantry and special operations officers who excelled at high-stakes decision-making now lead teams through critical business initiatives.

🫡 Logistics officers who previously managed complex supply chains in the field now optimize operations in the civilian sector.

👏 The intelligence officers whose strategic planning and analytical skills drive business intelligence and cybersecurity leadership.

🫡 The unit commanders who led hundreds of personnel with budget responsibility and now serve as executives guiding organizations forward.

👏 The aviation officers, combat engineers, communications specialists, and countless others who brought discipline, integrity, and mission-focused leadership to everything they do.

To our clients and colleagues who are veterans: Your commitment to service didn't end with your military career. The same values you demonstrated in uniform continue to inspire us and strengthen our community every day.

Thank you for your service.

We are honored to work alongside you.
